Question 1: Decide if it is better to receive $300 a week or to be paid hourly at a rate of $7.50 per hour. What factors could affect your decision? Give details.
Question 2: How would you help a friend who is struggling in math? Question 3: Ms. Baker and her daughter went shopping on Saturday. They bought at least one item from each of the 3 departments that they visited. Ms. Baker gave the clerk $120 and she got back $11.76 change. What items did they buy? Think about how much they spent. NO TAX TODAY! HOUSEWARES Dishtowels: $11.38 Curtain Rods: $12.98 Bath Mats: $29.58 CLOTHING Shirt: $30.98 Dress: $49.90 Slacks: $39.90 TOOLS Hammer: $17.90 Saw: $23.90 Drill: $25.78 Explain how you would solve this problem and provide your answer.
Sanaa Gailor

What could affect the factor is how any hours you work. If you work 8 hours a day, 5 times a week it doesn't matter because it adds up to 300 dollars a week no matter what even if you get 7.50 per hour.
Ms. Scott
8/8/2012 10:03:27 am
Sanaa, remember to use the color of your class for your last name. Also can you explain more about the $300 situation.

Ms. Scott,
Ruth Red
8/8/2012 10:57:08 am
It would depend on the amount of time that you worked. If you worked for 1 hour a week for 5 days, then it would be better if you took the $300. If you worked 7 days a week for 8 hrs, then you should take the $7.50 an hr.

I think it's better to be payed $7.50 hourly instead of $300 a week. My reasoning is that no matter how long you work and how many days a week, you'll still get the same amount in the end with the $300. If you take the $7.50 an hour, you would be able to stay longer if you were low on money and make more, but if you're good on money, you could come home early and stay later the next day. But, it definitely matters how many days and hours you work a week.

Nobody works 24-hours a day because no one has that kind of energy. Most people work 8-12 hours a day. So you would earn about $600.00 a month. So i agree because of you earn $7.50 an hour, and you get more money than earning $300 a week.

Mr. Max Red now that is a post!! I really appreciate how you disagreed with Najee but in a very educated way and respectful way. Great Job!!
jack red
8/8/2012 12:47:55 pm
Najee, you can only work like 8 hours a day. I think it's best to go with 300.
Max Red
8/8/2012 10:04:20 am
I compared 2 pay scales: one at $300 a week and the other at $7.50 an hour for 40 hours. I found out that if you work 40 hours a week the pay is the same. So.... if you know you're going to work less than 40 hours you should go with the $300 a week. If you know you'll work more than 40 hours then getting $7.50 an hour is better. If I didn't know how many hours I would work, I would choose $300 per week and not work any overtime.
Ben Green
8/8/2012 10:04:34 am
Something that could affect the factor is that the equation does not tell you how many hours you could work. If you worked for 8 hours 5 times a week you would still get payed $300. Also if I had a friend that did not understand something I would go over to him or her and explain it to them. In the word problem Ms. Baker bought a bath mat, a dress, a shirt, and a saw.
Ms. L. Scott
8/8/2012 10:38:22 am

Hampton Red
8/8/2012 10:46:25 am
No, I did the math again and it's actually 6.1 hrs per day if you want to get 300 dollars in a week.
Sahana Red
8/8/2012 10:49:10 am
Yep, I was thinking that too! Usually most working weeks are 5 days so that might be true!

Sahana Red
8/8/2012 10:59:48 am
OH! Just though of something! If you get 300 dollars a week it doesn't matter how many hours! So you could come for just an hour each day and still get a lot! With 7.50 it depends on how long you want to work!
Joseph Red
8/8/2012 01:32:35 pm
Very smart answer, Hampton! 8/8/2012 10:13:14 am
300$ a week or 7.50$ an hour....(whoops, got the dollar signs on the wrong side...) Hmm...I wouldn't be able to decide unless I knew how long the working hours were, and how many days a week I work! (5 days a week or 7 days a week?)

I would help them ask themselves the right questions to break it down. I use this in my problems so I know it works quite well.

HI! I disagree, I think that (like everyone is saying) 7.50 isn't going to be your best bet. I mean, have you really ever heard of anyone working for twenty-four hours? The average workday is like, nine. So, my answer is going to to be to get 3.00 a week.

I would prefer the $7.50 over $600.00 a week because if you do the math you get $180.00 a day a thats alot for one week. For the full week instead of getting $600.00 a week you get 1,176 in a week and thats way more than $600.00 a week

Juliana Red

I say that getting paid $300 weekly is than getting paid $7.50 an hour. I say this because most people work about six hours, and a week is woth $225 $7.50 wise. But Ifyour jod is over six hours it would be better to take the $7.50 because you 'd earn over $315. I'd only take $300 a week if my job is six hours or shorter.

Ms. Scott asked us to compare a pay rate of $300 a week or $7.50 an hour. When I decided I took in two main factors. First, $300 always is assured. Second, you could get sick, injured, or just be plain late. In conclusion, I would chose $300 a week.

If you worked an hour and got $7.50 per hour for 8 hours you would make you would make $38 a day. you would make $266 a week. in this case you would have to say that making $300 dollars a week is better and more than $7.50 per hour.
Madison Red
8/8/2012 10:56:32 am
Actually if you work the normal hours a week (40) you would recieve exactly 300 dollars even if you did get paid 7.50 an hour. So it depends on how many hours you work. You can work overtime and get more than 300, or you could have a part-time job or something and get paid less.
Ms. L. Scott

In question one the factor would have a problem because it does not tell you how many hours you would work. But if you work 7 days in a week for 8 hours you would earn more than 300 dollars. So I would rather be payed $7.50 an hour than just being payed $300.

That's a very good and logical way of thinking, Hope. But most of the time people don't spend 8 hours a day, 7 days a week because they prefer time off. Having said that, they usually get paid more than their hourly wage if they do overtime, so if you had to work more that 40 hours a week, getting paid hourly is the way to go.

The amount of hours you work can decide which way you would like to be payed. For example, if you were to work 9 hours a day you would rather be payed $7.50 per hour because it would amount to a greater total of money than if you worked for the same amount of hours and were payed $300 a week. The amount of hours you work could affect the factor. As I said before, you would rather get payed $300 dollars per week if you worked for a small number of hours.

I answered the 3rd question using the following steps. The first thing I did was subtract $11.26 from $120 to determine how much money they used while shopping. The next step was to etsimate how many items were purchased. I added the most expensive items from each section and found that they had to have bought 4 or more items. I added different items together and found that to get the .24 I needed 3 .08s and one .90. I went through more combos until I found a group of four that worked. :) The ones that I used were curtain rod, slacks, drill, and bath mats.

I would make $1260 that week. If I work an average week, 40 hours, I would make $300, So if I work more than 40 hours a week, it's better to be paid by the hour.

1: I can not say because I do not know how many hours a day I would work. I would prefer working nine hours a day for five days a week. If I got paid 7.50 per hour, than I would make $327.50 instead of just $300. If I do not det more than $300 as a total, I would chose the opposite. Question 2 is a difficult question. The three steps I would take though are 1. Try to find out what the problem is and why they are struggling. 2. Try to teach it to them in a way that they would understand it, such as: if the problem was 4.4 x 5 and they couldn't find where to put the decimal, I would tell them to move it over one from the right. Step 3 would be that if I still couldn't teach it to them, I would try to draw a picture or build a model.

#1. Getting $300 dollars a week would be great, although, according to how many hours you are working #$7.50 an hour might even be better! Like many others said, if you happened to work 40 hours a week, it wouldn't really matter which one you choose because $7.50 x 40 = $300. However, if you worked more then 40 hours a week, you would obviously choose to receive $7.50 an hour instead of getting underpaid. Although, if you happened to work LESS than 40 hours a week, you would definitely choose to get paid $300 a week, IF you wanted more money!

I tried guess and check on question 3. I spent about an hour trying different strategies. It says that she would need AT LEAST one from each category. That means that there could be and is more than one item in one category. One strategy I used was to try to just add up the cents from each item and try to get 24, because the total she spent is 108.24, which I figured out by subtracting her change by the money she came with. To get 24 cents, I figured I would need three items with cents that ended with 8. Plus, I could have an item that ended in 0. Also, I tried to estimate, but I never made it. Good job to whoever figured it out. did you use a calculator?

I would help out a friend by going over the problem again. I would also compare the elements of the problem with something that they like. Another easy way is to go over notes with them. I could also go with them to ask a teacher to explain more to him/her. I think they would soon understand the topic that I helped them in.

#1 Hi everyone! This is kendal and i would rather get $300 a week because say if you get $7.50 an hour, you don't know how many hours you work but you would have to work a lot of hours so i prefer to get $300 a week. #2. I would help a friend who is struggling in math by telling them my strategy which is to read the question twice and make sure you understand what it is asking you, then you break the question down sentence by sentence. That always helps me when I'm struggling!!!!

It is better to be payed 7.50 a hour because I used 24 hour a full day times 7.50 for your pay and it got me $180. On it is $180 times 7 for every day of the week and got $1260. It is better to be payed hourly than daily

I would want to work the full week to earn $300. I want to do this because it is easier to keep track of. You would have to work longer to earn $300 if you worked for $7.50 an hour. I might change my mind depending on how many hours I would work in a week. If I was able to earn more money being payed by the hour than I would rather do that. Over all they both seem like good choices, but I have to go with being pay weekly.

Mrs. Baker pays $120 and gets $11.76 back. Using this information I subtracted $11.76 from $120 and got a total of $108.24. I then was able to find out what Mrs. Baker bought by guessing and checking. Mrs. Baker bought curtain rods, bath mats, slacks, and a drill. All of those objects add up to exactly $108.24.

I think it would be better to take the $7.50 per hour. I think that because if you worked for a long time you could get money depending on how long you worked so you could make more or less.If you take the $300 a week you would be stuck with $300. ( unless you get a raise.)
Max Red

Hi everyone! This is Olivia Red and I think that it would be better to receive $7.50 an hour rather than $300 a week because all of the hours added up at the end of the week equal $1,260 and that is clearly more than $300.
Xander Red
8/8/2012 12:33:12 pm
It would depend on the number of hours I work. It would also depend on how fast I could do the work. If I did a job for $300 and got it done in one day I could do another $300 job the next day and make $1500 a week unless I work eight hours a day five days a week then it would not matter. I would choose $300 a week.
Gerald Red
8/8/2012 12:34:07 pm
It depends on how long you work for 7.50 an hour if you work 40 hours its the same amount if you worked 45 you would get 337.50 and 262.5 for 35 hours, so it all depends on how much you work
jack red
8/8/2012 12:35:05 pm

What about question three are you struggling with?
Payton green
8/8/2012 12:49:53 pm
Q1: I think it needs more information to actually answer the question, but in my opinion it really matters on how many hours of work you do. Like if you worked 9 hours for 5 days and got payed $7.50 per hour, I would rather get paid $7.50 an hour for 5 days because you would've got paid more. Another example is if you worked 3 hours and for 5 days I would choose receiving $300.00 a week.
Savannah Red

I think you used a great strategy in solving this problem. I used a seven hour workday, but I think using nine hours may have been better. Great job!!!!
Savannah Red
8/8/2012 12:55:00 pm
This problem requires a lot of thought and time. I have decided that there is no sure way to decide unless the work hours provided. Assuming it is a seven hour work day, you would have $367.50. This is not clarified, so it’s not positive, but it’s a good estimate. According to this dollar amount, you would want to be paid $7.50 an hour. Variables in this problem would be the work hours and whether or not you worked on the weekends. If not, you would receive $252.50 a week. Therefore, you would choose to be paid $300 a week. I have come to the conclusion, based on the information given, that you would probably choose the $300.

Question Two:
ERIC RED
8/8/2012 01:09:07 pm
First, I subtracted how much change Ms. Baker got back from how much she payed. $11.76 - $120 = $108.24. Then, I added the bath mats ($29.58), slacks ($39.90), drill ($25.78), and curtain rods ($12.98) together. $29.58 + 39.90 + 25.78 + 12.98 = 108.24. Therefore Ms. Baker bought the bath mats, slacks, drill, and the curtain rods.
Joseph Red
8/8/2012 01:12:31 pm
Question 1. It depends if a week counts as 168 hours, which is the amount of hours in a week. Or, if a week meant 8 hours a day for seven days. I would also want to know if I get weekends off. There is not enough information to know which is best. For example, if a week was 168 hours without weekends, then I could make $1,620 in the week at $7.50 per hour.

First she spent $120 and her change was $11.76. Her total was $108.24. Since $108.24 ends in a 4 you need to have 3 items that end in a 8 to get 24. So I started picking items that ended with 8.You have to select one from each department store. Then I started to guess which one fit......

I think that 7.50 an hour would be better because if you do the adding of the total work hours (depending on your job) , you might get an outcome higher than 300$ in cash. For example, if you work in a hospital you will have to stay late and treat people that have gotten their arms broken and stuff like that. 7.50x maybe 20 hours a day 7 days a week = $1,050 a week which would make me feel great.

Mrs. Baker gives the cashier $120 and gets $11.76. So I subtracted $11.76 from $120 and got a total of $108.24. I then was able to find out what Mrs. Baker bought by guess and check. Number 1 It is not a good idea for you to ask for $300 dollars because if you work 8 hours a day that is 8 times 7.50 that will be 60 dollars a day if we work 7 days a week that will be 420 dollars a week it will be 120 dollars more than you ask .

Q1- To earn 300$ a week at 7.50 an hour I would have to work 40 hours a week (300 divided by 7.50= 40.) If I want to work 5 days a week I would work 8 hrs a day. That would mean $300 per week, but say I want more than $300, I would go with $7.50 per hour so I could work more hours to earn more.
